Angel Investing: What You Need to Know, According to Investment Analyst Melissa Oppermann

This is an excerpt from a long conversation with Melissa Oppermann about finance, angel investing, and equity. I met her through a friend, and later I was a guest on her podcast WalkingTheTalk. I've never learned so much so quickly in my entire life.

If you want to invest in an entrepreneur / startup, there are several ways you can do it. If you are an individual investing solely your own money, then you would be called an Angel Investor (short for "Angel"). A venture capital fund (VC for short) typically invests the money of various individuals, institutions or the like into a number of companiesThe investment of an Angel can be roughly divided into two categories:

  1. Equity Investment, where money is exchanged for company shares

  2. Convertible Notes (so-called convertible loans, or convertibles for short), in which a loan is initially given by you, which is literally converted into company shares at a later date instead of being repaid.
